Welcome to Dumfries and Galloway CBT and Psychological Therapies Service

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy is an evidenced based approach to psychological and physical health problems. It is recommended in the NICE guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for psychological and physical health problems.

You will work together with your psychotherapist on the issues that are causing you distress. This will be a collaborative approach working on past and present events and factors exploring ways you feel and think and discussing things you may wish to change.

The approach generally focuses on situations in the present, but will also draw on the past and past experiences where these are relevant to the current problem.
The main goal of CBT is to help individuals, families or couples develop knowledge, understanding and coping strategies to bring about changes in behaviour and thinking, in order to alleviate symptoms and enable people to address and manage problems and issues.

Depression and Anxiety

Depression and Anxiety are very common symptoms of psychological distress with one in four people feeling anxious or depressed at some time in their lives.

People may feel low in mood, and often also ashamed of how they feel, and may think that they are not coping.

This may lead to a reduction or even stopping doing some everyday pleasurable, necessary, and routine activities, and may lead to thinking in a more negative and unhelpful way about ourselves, others, and the future.

Sometimes when stressful things happen it can place extra demands and can lead to many of the problems as mentioned above.
